Akathistos (Greek Hymn honouring the
Virgin Mary). Facsimile edition of the first hymn to the Virgin
included in a codex which is kept at the Library of El Escorial
(Madrid) under the generic title of "Poesías en loor de la Virgen",
press mark R.I.19. Originally written in the 6th century in
Bizantium and copied for Philip II on the event of his coronation, it
has 30 sheets of parchment (18,5 x 24,5 cm) decorated with 23
picture-like miniatures which take half of the page and 15 ornaments
with vegetal motifs, all of them hot stamped on thick gold leaves,
embossed in all its pages and bound in dry-stamped yellow silk as the
original. Its additional volume consists of a text transcription, a
translation into Spanish and an historic study on arts and codices
carried out by Gregorio de Andrés and bounded as the facsimile one.
